Project Management

The Inside Project Syndrome

By Val Novak

Based on many years of project implementation experience, we have identified some of the major stumbling blocks companies encounter when trying to manage projects internally, instead of hiring professional project managers to run their projects.

  1. Project teams usually do not have the necessary experience to do a complete analysis of the current business status and determine the best future actions.

  2. Project team members usually have other responsibilities and cannot devote full attention to the project, therefore delaying the original objectives.

  3. Management support for the actions of the team, lacks the necessary focus.

  4. Without a third party to act as a soundboard, there is no one to determine if the actions are valid and the team is headed in the right direction.

  5. Other priorities take precedence and projects are delayed or dropped.

  6. There are no magic buttons or silver bullets to solve company initiatives. It takes a lot of hard work and focus by top-level managers; this does not usually happen.

  7. Projects headed by internal project leaders, usually do not run as a full fledged project with all the necessary attention and direction, especially adherence to time tables, deliverables and commitments. This results in higher costs.
History has shown that, in most cases, projects managed by professional project managers are less costly than the internally managed projects by people who have very little project management experience.
