Pre-Meeting Technical Presentation
Our pre-meeting speaker is Jim White from One Stop. He will share his knowledge and activities in the following areas:
- Employment and development opportunities in the NE Ohio region
- Career exploration and labor market information
- Networks to obtain resources available at both state and federal levels
- Information to make you an informed employer and citizen for growth
- Training and training critique
Jim’s mantra was the importance of flexibility. What transferable skills do we have to apply to a new and different job? What other positions are available that will utilize existing skills? He took the group on a virtual tour of the
OneStopOhio.org web site and several of the links from the site. For new job seekers, there is a site tutorial with video clips. He also visited OhioMeansJobs.com and distributed printed information aimed at both employers and job seekers. The ONetCenter.org can help provide searches for similar jobs and describes job tasks expected in that job. The new MySkillsMyFuture.org site has a wealth of comparative positions with wages for specific locales. Check out these free sites:

Main Presentation
Our main Speaker is Brian Lee. His most recent work has been in the green/renewable energy field for safety training in wind turbine technology. Brian has over twenty-two years of experience as a journeyman electrician and instructor with credentials including:
- State of Ohio Licensed adult continuing education teacher
- OSHA 10 hour, 30 hour and OSHA 500 certified instructor
- Electrical instructor
- Ohio Licensed Electrical Contractor
- Department of Labor Journeyman Electrician
- Licensed in fire alarm installation
- Licensed rough terrain forklift operator and power actuated tools operator
- Red Cross certified instructor in CPR, AED and first aid
- Hilti certification
As an instructor and contractor, Brian has considerable experience with electrical installations and maintenance, and the dangers inherent to each. He believes that safety and quality go hand-in-hand, with safe work practices providing the best opportunity for a quality product, installation or service. Brian’s presentation focused on the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. The discussion detailed the dangers of arc flash in high energy electrical circuits, including the presence of both molten liquid and vaporized copper, the explosive force of the arc, and preventive measures including flame retardant personal protective equipment (PPE). Videos from Westex Inc. showed the destructive nature of arc faults ranging from 7 to 35 cal/cm2 and the effectiveness of their PPE in minimizing potential injury. Brian also pointed out that OSHA uses the following precautions, in order:
1st Defense: Eliminate the hazard
2nd Defense: Use of engineering controls (shields, guards, etc.)
3rd Defense: Increase personal distance from the hazard
4th Defense: Investigate the use of PPE
